Initial Margin Vs. Maintenance Margin: What's the Difference?

Investors must cover at least 50 percent of the initial purchase price of stocks bought on margin. This is known as the initial margin. The maintenance margin represents the amount of equity the investor must maintain in the margin account after the initial purchase.
